Why We Chose Kelso Conservation Area

Every family wants an adventure—something that will stay in their hearts forever or become an unforgettable memory.

For some people, it's breathtaking scenery. For others, it's simply being together and sharing laughs that will be remembered for years.

This day became the perfect excuse to get out of the house and spend an entire day outdoors.

We left home around 11:00 a.m. and arrived at Kelso Conservation Area just before noon, excited for our first big family paddleboarding adventure. None of us were experts, but we were looking forward to trying something new, spending the day outside, and enjoying everything the lake had to offer.

By the time we packed up around 6:00 p.m., none of us were quite ready for the day to end.

We were looking for a place that was beginner-friendly, relaxing, and easy to spend an entire day without feeling crowded.

Kelso Conservation Area offered exactly what we were looking for.

The day pass cost $40 for our family, which felt like great value considering we planned to stay there all day.

One of the first things we noticed was how well organized everything was. Parking was clearly laid out, making it easy to find a space without driving around in circles.

From the parking lot, it was only a short walk to the beach, where everything we needed was already nearby.

First Impressions

The beach was much bigger than we expected.

There was plenty of room to spread out without feeling crowded, even with other families enjoying the beautiful weather.

The swimming area was safely roped off, giving swimmers their own space, while another section of the beach made it easy to launch paddleboards, kayaks, and other watercraft.

There were shaded areas for escaping the sun, clean washrooms, changing rooms just steps from the beach, and everything felt well maintained.

What We Did

After setting up our spot on the beach, we couldn't wait to get our paddleboard into the water.

Since we were beginners, we weren't quite sure what to expect.

Luckily, the lake was incredibly calm.

The water was smooth, gentle, and easy to navigate, making it the perfect place to learn.

As we paddled farther from shore, we explored different parts of the lake, quietly gliding past aquatic plants and Canadian geese—which we made sure to give plenty of space.

It felt less like a sport and more like exploring a hidden world from the water.

After paddleboarding for a while, we came back to shore for a swim.

The water was refreshing without being too cold, making it comfortable to stay in for quite a while.

Throughout the afternoon, we switched between paddleboarding, swimming, relaxing on the beach, and simply enjoying the sunshine.

As a special treat before heading home, we visited the little ice cream stand right beside the beach.

After spending the entire day in the sun, ice cream was the perfect way to finish our adventure.

What Stood Out

The calmness of the lake made the biggest impression on us.

For first-time paddleboarders, it couldn't have been a better place to learn.

Instead of worrying about waves or strong currents, we could simply focus on enjoying ourselves and exploring at our own pace.

We also loved how thoughtfully the beach was designed.

Everything—from the organized parking to the swimming area, paddleboard launch, changing rooms, washrooms, and shaded areas—made the entire day easy and stress-free.

Being able to swim and paddleboard in the same place made it even better.

The Atmosphere

The entire lake had a peaceful, relaxed feeling.

The only sounds were gentle splashes from paddleboards, children laughing in the swimming area, birds calling from the shoreline, and the occasional breeze moving through the trees.

It wasn't a place where people rushed from one activity to another.

Instead, everyone seemed happy to spend the day at their own pace, enjoying the sunshine and making the most of summer.
