Family Paddleboarding Adventure

Speaking for our family, I think we need a new adventure wherever we go. It can be a small hiccup, or it can really remind us of the importance of choosing carefully. And this adventure had, as always, a hiccup that we should have remembered.

But before all of that, we had packed our brand-new paddleboard, all the beach gear that we needed, and, of course, the essentials: food and snacks. We hopped into our car, getting ready for a relaxing, quiet, and beautiful day ahead.

Well, out of the three, we got one done: the beautiful part. The scenery fully exceeded our expectations, with deep caves, cliffs overlooking the water, and even a secret waterfall hidden beneath a pathway of trees. By the end of the day, we were tired and happy from seeing the scenery, but, as always, an obstacle remained: humans.

Why We Chose Rockwood

Through our search for a place to paddleboard, Rockwood showed up as one of the most exquisite places to paddleboard because of the caves and cliffs that appear along your path. We wanted to spend the whole day paddleboarding and just relaxing in the hot sun.

Before arriving, we made a quick pit stop at a local supermarket because of a sign that advertised a fresh strawberry and rhubarb pie—which later was the perfect dessert for the family.

We drove to the entrance of the park around noon, only to find a very long line of cars waiting to enter. We immediately realized that our family wasn’t the only one ready to relax, so I think we stood there for around 10 minutes until we were finally allowed to enter and pay the fee.

After making it through the entrance, another setback occurred: the original parking lot was full, so we were directed to a grassy field that was much farther away than the actual parking lot. It took around six minutes to go from our car to the beach, not including the time it took to walk uphill back to our car. It was definitely one of the hardest workouts I’ve experienced.

What We Did

Even before reaching the water, we heard the expected noise of a crowd, although, to our surprise, it seemed bigger than we expected. The beach was packed with families, umbrellas, and towels, which left very little open space to relax comfortably. Despite the crowds, the scenery was truly mind-blowing, and we saw many paddleboards, kayaks, and canoes in the large river area.

Around one o’clock, we finally launched our paddleboard and began to explore the water. As we stepped one foot into the water, we discovered that it was ice-cold. That altered our mindset: we did not want to fall into the water. The farther we paddled away from the busy beach, the more peaceful and quiet it became. We spent the next several hours exploring different parts of the lake, slowly paddling through calm water and discovering secret spaces that we would not have seen from the beach. An example of this was the secret waterfall that we found between the trees, which was definitely an out-of-this-world experience for us.

One of the highlights of this trip happened while we were calmly paddling and looking at the caves. We saw a small creature pop out of the water, run along the cliff, and disappear into the leaves. A little later, we realized that we had seen a mink, and that truly made our day.

Later in the afternoon, we returned to the beach, hoping to relax for a bit, but, as you might have guessed, the crowds made it rather difficult. With so many people on the beach, it was hard to relax or even find personal space, so, after a short break, we decided it was best to go back out on the paddleboard.

Around five-thirty, we made it back to the shore and started to pack up, which meant deflating our paddleboard, packing all our equipment, and carrying it back to the car. But, of course, we had to end the day with some ice cream and reflection.

Rockwood was a great adventure.

Firstly, there were lots of people. We even needed to wait to get into the park, and there were not many places to park! When we got to the beach, there were absolutely no spots to lay out our paddleboard. We somehow found a place, even though it was not in the shade and did not have a table! Also, the toilets were not clean, and there were no change rooms.

On the other hand, it’s not so far from Toronto, and while we were driving, there were shops and bakeries that we could go into. I think the best part of Rockwood was that there was a great space to paddleboard. It was really beautiful because there were multiple deep caves, waterfalls, and even narrow paths. We even saw a mink in the rocks. In conclusion, after going there, I think I would rate it 6/10, but I think it deserves a second chance, so we will go there again.

Final Thoughts

Looking back on this day, we were reminded of how important timing is and that, although some things don’t go your way, the experience can still be unforgettable.

Yes, the beach was way more crowded than we expected.

Yes, the water was ice-cold and unpleasant to swim in.

But none of that took away from the extremely beautiful scenery that we saw: the towering cliffs, the peaceful waterways, the hidden waterfall, and the hours spent bonding and exploring together.

Helpful Tips

If you are planning to visit Rockwood, here are some tips:

Visit on a weekday. The park becomes extremely crowded on summer weekends.
Arrive early to snag a spot in the original parking lot and in the shade on the beach.
Be prepared for a long walk from the parking areas to the beach if the closer lots are full.
Don’t spend your entire visit on the beach; make sure to go out on the water and explore the canals.
If you do have extra time, there are hiking trails that overlook some of those special spots on the water.
